Interior wall protection

The interior walls of the building can also be secured. This is typically done by dividing the building into sections and protecting the sections according to various security levels. In this way, sectioning can be part of the building's adaptive security, allowing free passage between the different sections under normal conditions, but affording the opportunity to deny or restrict access between the sections, if the risk level rises. How to divide the building into sections should be decided based on a risk assessment. This typically includes considerations of e.g. the location of the building on the site and the existence of a stand-off zone, concentrations of valuable assets, employees' work routines, and security budget.

Since a building is typically already divided into fire sections, it can be an easy solution to include them. However, it is important to be aware that fire-resistant products may lose their approval if they are physically modified to form part of a protective layer. E.g., if a lock is installed on a fire door this may mean that the door is no longer an approved fire door. Here, you should order a fire door prepared for the specific security components that you want installed, so that the door's approval includes the security components.

Furthermore, you should always check that security measures do not obstruct or lead to any restrictions in the function of escape routes. Legislation on how escape routes should be designed and dimensioned may conflict with the installation of security measures. The Danish Building Regulations specify the requirements of the Danish Building Act and, among other things, provide guidelines for the design of an escape route area. The local fire and rescue services are the supervisory authority.

According to Danish law, the right to use the escape routes only applies during the building’s normal operating hours and not when the building is empty, vacated or locked. The daily operation and use of the building will determine whether one’s building is governed by this law and whether there are additional requirements. The authorities may make recommendations that must be followed if deemed necessary for the safe evacuation of the building.
