PUBLIC SPACES AND OPEN SQUARES - PERMANENT

Securing the city's public spaces should focus on creating attractive urban spaces, where a coherent, holistic security solution is naturally integrated into the design of the site. Regardless of the protective security measures, the site should be perceived as open and welcoming and remain accessible and inviting.

The following examples show an urban space with protective security measures naturally integrated into the perimeter of the square.

Plinth

The square is constructed as a continuous plinth with a raised edge as a protective perimeter. The plinth is part of the urban space and serves as a unifying architectural element that can also be used as seating.

Other fixtures can be included in protecting stairs and ramps against encroaching vehicles.

The plinth is designed so that edges etc. do not pose a hazard in daily use, during escape or evacuation.

Green areas

The overall perimeter of the square is secured by a low edge that surrounds large green areas. The green areas form part of the unifying design of the square. The low edge can also be used as seating.

Outside the main passage access is restricted by bollards or fixtures.

The simple architectural solution provides a large available surface and considerable freedom to plan and furnish the urban space.

Reinforced and integrated urban furniture

Security-minded urban furnishings such as raised garden beds, benches, sculptures and water basins, form part of the site's perimeter protection.

In the example shown, trees have also been integrated into the solution. Bollards have been placed along the road, until the trees are large enough to provide the desired protection.
