PUBLIC SPACES AND OPEN SQUARES

Public spaces are physical areas accessible by the general public where everyone can move freely. Protecting public spaces against terrorism is often associated with areas that may present themselves as attractive soft targets for attackers; i.e. places where large numbers of people congregate, such as squares, shopping streets or major events.

These areas are often characterised by a conflict between the desire for physical security and the desire for open, democratic spaces and free access. Therefore, protecting a public space requires a great deal of attention to both aspects when establishing security solutions.

The examples shown are all based on a public urban space that is open on all sides.
The square is bordered on all four sides by roads and buildings.
