Signage

Signage can be an effective form of communication and preventive measure. Most people read the information on a sign and follow the instructions; therefore, signs are often used in security. A sign communicating that an area is under CCTV surveillance can act as a deterrent because it informs a potential intruder that others may be observing their actions. Signage can also be part of behavioural design; e.g. if you want people to use a particular entrance.

When using signage as a protective security measure, the aim will often be to influence a perpetrator to "move" the intended action to another location, by making the organisation’s security awareness and the use of security measures visible. Be aware that excessive signage can also have a negative effect, by attracting attention to that fact that there is "something" deemed worth protecting on the location.

When implementing signage, be aware that there may be laws and regulations governing the design and placement of signs in public spaces.
