Lighting and crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED)

Exterior lighting in squares and similar spaces has a preventive effect against unauthorised access and criminal activity. If designed correctly, lighting can act as a deterrent by eliminating shadows and dark patches that can hide a person and their movement. Plants and landscaping of the surrounding area can also be part of CPTED.

Lighting can provide a sense of security for the building user or support security guards and electronic monitoring systems By creating a visible field for observation in darkness, lighting can support detection measures. Conversely, an attacker may use it for orientation; therefore, lighting must be used with attention to this risk.

When implementing CPTED, attention should be paid to local legislation. E.g. in Denmark, there are laws governing light pollution that must be considered in the design and installation of lighting.
